Have you visited MoCo?

16 Dec

What is MoCo?  It’s short for Montgomery County, specifically in Maryland.  There are other Montgomery Counties; many of them, in fact.  General Richard Montgomery, whom this article calls the First American Hero (from the Revolutionary War) had many places named after him!

I found that information on Montgomery one day when I was searching for some place local to visit.  In exploring my own county, I found some neat historical places.  They are not in downtown DC.  They are not part of the mighty Smithsonian.  They are practically in our back yards.

But knowing that is not enough for me.  They need to be on the map!  So I’m starting a project to put these places “on the map” using a smartphone app called FourSquare and a FourSquare list.

Some of the places are already “on the map”.  Some are not. Well, in the next month or so, I am going to revisit these 12 places and make sure they are all on, at least, FourSquare’s app list.

As of today, I have three places on the list.  Two were already out there, as they are part of the National Park Service.  The Madonna of the Trails statue, located in Bethesda, MD was not on the Google Map.  So, using FourSquare, I added it.

Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, MD

The Clara Barton House (inside), Glen Echo, MD

If you have FourSquare, and live in this area, let me know if you can find these places!  Or if you think this is a neat idea, do you have some neat places in your own area you could put “on the map”?

Taking a look at art around me!

Found a street festival in nearby Takoma Park!  I came out onto the street, my post-yoga coffee in hand, and paused as I took in all the white tents.  There are many street festivals now-a-days, hoping to get in early on the holiday shoppers and with good reason.  I had thought that the Takoma Park festival was going to be fairly small, but I wasn’t even able to finish visiting all the tents!

I saw some watercolors, large and small.  There was another gal who offered pastels of locations to which she had travelled, large and small, from all over: New Mexico, Arizona, Michigan, and other places.  The Tile Company did tiles, herons, cats, fish, flowers with beautiful colors and glazes?  I ran into a gal who has done line drawings of local areas.  She also does custom pet portraits in watercolor!  One more gal did local areas, Annapolis and marine, fishing sort of topics.

So, it was a very thorough sample of the sort of artwork that created in my area.  What I enjoy is that these folks are doing what they enjoy doing.  This seems to echo what I’ve heard, “Draw For Yourself” or “Paint What Interests You”.

This is some of the research I’m doing to decide where MY Art fits in.

SOLD!

Terrific news!  That art show opening last night (last post) resulted in a warm gathering of family and friends; my favorite part of art shows!

It also resulted in a sale (!!) of one of my pieces that I had put into the Art Show!  Trés incrediblé! (I don’t speak French, so why the French exclamations? Don’t know.)

Was chatting with good friend and experienced fellow artist, Debbie Smith Mezzetta, about the price choice, the frame choice, and the Art Show choice.
