Color!
9 OctWhen I woke up this morning, I looked out the front window. The morning sun threw a glistening blanket of orange over yellowing fall leaves. The leaves, the color of autumn cheddar cheese, hid behind the gentle green of tree leaves in the foreground. These colors, together or apart, make me happy. If you were to ask me exactly how, I don’t know that I would be able to tell you. When I see a vivid color that is especially pleasing, I encounter a feeling of warm fullness in my chest. It spreads from shoulder to shoulder, covering where my heart lives (both the physical and sentimental heart), and tucks around the corners and flows over my back, a little bit like wearing a shawl.
I am momentarily happy and satisfied. All is right with the world in just that moment.
This feeling is temporary because the color goes away. However, when I see the color again, I get that same feeling again. Then I want to have it, I want to wear it, I want to eat it, I want to drink it…I want it to envelop me! If it was a sheet, I would wrap myself up in it and roll around in it.
I used to use money to get this color for me, unconsciously. I would buy color in the form of THINGS because it was part of that “want to have” and “want it to be around” instinct I get. After discovering that I had a ridiculous amount of yarn (3 bags full!!) for knitting projects (that never got knitted) and wrapping paper and candles and other house decor that I had collected in various, brilliant colors, I donated them all to charity organizations that would most certainly get a better use out of them.
But I didn’t have to stop appreciating color. I decided to enjoy color in a way that didn’t cost me a lot of money, that wouldn’t bring a great deal of clutter into my home, and would be something beautiful that I could share with other like-minded folks!
